I (Paul Servos) grew up on a small vineyard overlooking Lake Ontario. Following graduation in 1982 from the University of Waterloo with a BA in Environmental Studies I left home and drove west. As I have had a lifetime passion for sailing my goal was to establish myself on the shores of the Pacific Ocean. However my car ran out of fuel and as a young man with empty pockets I found myself at home in Alberta.

My career has taken on four distinct phases, each lasted approximately a decade.

The first phase began in 1983 when I joined the Alberta Parks Service as a Ranger. Within a short time I transferred to organization development work with the Alberta Ministry of Recreation and Parks / Community Development. In this role I assisted sport and recreation organizations funded by Alberta Lotteries. During this period I obtained a Masters Degree in Recreation Administration from the University of Alberta.

Following a downsizing of the Provincial Government and an experience as Program Manager at the Blue Lake Leadership Centre near Jasper Alberta I entered the next phase of my career.

  In 1992 I joined the Alberta Recreation and Parks Association www.arpaonline.ca  in the role of Executive Director. This was at a time when the Benefits of Recreation Catalogue was being formed as an advocacy campaign across Canada. We also launched the Recreation Facility Lifecycle Planning initiative and a competency based approach to educational offerings.

I found myself a good car with a full tank of gas in 1998 and finished the trip I began after completing university. Longing for the sea and freezing in the dark of the long Alberta winters motivated a transfer to the sister organization, the British Columbia Recreation and Parks Association www.bcrpa.bc.ca . Balancing the budget  to ensure long-term success of  the workshops and events was the critical deliverable.

Along the way I married a beautiful girl from the prairies – Maggie. We settled in Richmond, BC along the Fraser River. We purchase our pride and joy, a Niagara 32 named T’windward, sailing was once again our joy.

While on an adventure around Vancouver Island in 2000 I noticed a small ad in the local newspaper for the role of General Manager of the Royal Victoria Yacht Club www.rvyc.bc.ca . When we returned I applied and to my pleasure was successful – the third phase of my career began. Maggie gained employment with the Victoria School Board as a Special Needs Educational Assistant. At last I achieved my goal of living on the West Coast of Canada and working in marine tourism. The Club was modernized with the introduction of point of sale accounting, a revitalized clubhouse, and establishment of outstations. A long-term plan was completed that addressed the rapidly changing demographics of the membership.

    In 2002 the Greater Victoria Harbour Authority www.victoriaharbour.org was formed and I watched with interest as it shaped. In 2005 I accepted the position of Manager of Business Development with the Authority and grew a reputation for getting things done in difficult environments. We brought essential change to each of the organization’s lines of business, cruise tourism, marinas, and property management. A record of success in transforming the Society’s core business led to appointment as General Manager/CEO. With a firm hand on the helm I set out to build the organization’s sustainability. The economic impact of the Authority’s business activity is now estimated to be over $200 million per year. Ogden Point is the busiest cruise ship port of call terminal in Canada.

 fishing With gray hair transforming my perspective of the good life, and once again seeking fair winds and calm seas, I enter the fourth phase of my career.

In 2011 I formed the consulting firm TACTIX Leadership Inc. so that I could share my experiences. A major project undertaken was to assist the Recreation Facilities Association of BC to improve their governance and to establish a strategic plan with execution strategy.

In 2013 Tactix Leadership Inc. acquired the Flag Shop Victoria www.victoria.flagshop.com . We have rebuilt this enterprise into a vibrant local manufacturer and retailer of flags, banners, and custom printed promotional products. The franchise now services all of Vancouver Island.

Paul’s latest project is a book on strategic execution in the not for profit sector – it is expected in 2017.
